Hey Font Hogs! This winter I’m teaching a 3-session typography workshop at the Nantucket Atheneum, Confessions of a Font Hog: The Truth About Type. Helvetica, Georgia, Verdana and Times! Oh my! Type is everywhere in our lives, in all of our communications, on signage, in advertising and personal communications. Yet most of us don’t know much the type we use. We make choices that involve type everyday, but are they the best choices? In this workshop we’ll talk about the fundamentals of good typography; best type practices; how to choose type; the good, the bad, and the ugly of type; type anatomy and special characters; and some of the stories behind the typefaces. We’ll discuss the Top Ten Most Hated Fonts of All Time and the Top 10 Best. We’ll also do a few type exercises. Love your type!

Workshop goals:

• How to talk about type
• Learn about leading, kerning, swashes and x-height
• Learn to make type look great in print and online
• Learn about type families, design and type trends
• Choosing the right typeface for your communication
• Common type mistakes and blunders
• Which typefaces to avoid
• Which typefaces to love
